Keeping Busy in Haiti

League of Hope would like to thank all of the people making relief and recovery efforts in Haiti possible. League of Hope has recently been approved as a Partner with MAP International, which allows us to deliver high-quality pharmaceuticals to desperately needy clinics in Haiti. On March 15, League of Hope took 150 pounds of medicine with a wholesale value of about $40,000US to Port Au Prince for the Bill Rice Clinic on La Gonave. This medicine was purchased with funds raised by Girl Scout Troop 3538 at Morningside Elementary School.

League of Hope organized, funded and led a group of agricultural experts from University of Georgia and Birdsong Peanuts on an assessment trip travelling from Port Au Prince to Cap Haitien. Check back soon for video of the trip.

In 2010, 100% of received funds are going directly to League of Hope projects in Haiti!

Plans

I am finishing up with a few freight forwards: supplies donated by Emory University, Gainesville College and Childspring...should be 10 pallets or so. Hopefully, these will make it on a C130 out of Opa Laka, Florida for free.

I am meeting on Monday with the Dean of the UGA Agricultural School to discuss a partnership of ag and poultry experts helping to ensure the spring crops on La Gonave are maximized. This could be an important step in helping the Haitians supply their own food locally, which 50 years ago was common.

I am also excited about organizing a partnership of hospitals, doctors and suppliers of prostheses to help the estimated 100,000 that have had amputations as a result of the earthquake. This plan was hatched last night after a conversation with my friend Ingrid Arnesen in Petionville, Haiti who described walking through a clinic with human arms and legs lying all over the floor. If you want to join in the effort, please let me know. Graham

Videos of Airstrip in Leogane

The pilots in this whole saga are the true heroes in my opinion:

David Lee of AirShares Elite and Eric Zipkin and Adam Schaefer of Tradewinds Aviation are the three that I was associated with.  They put a lot of effort and a lot of their own resources into early relief missions to Haiti:

Out of Leogane

RoRo was the foreman of the platform project for the water tank. This is his tin-roof tent in the Nursing School Camp. RoRo and others located several tanks from downed buildings throughout Leaogane which will be picked up today. Save ther Children is supplying a 3 inch hose to hook to the distant well. Deep Springs will treat the water. The other tanks will go to other camps throughout Leogane.
I am sitting on a plane now in Santiago. The trees along the road where we landed have been cleared making the take-off much easier. League of Hope was able to provide several families with funds to build a better tent. Right now, they have blankets and sheets as the roof and they sleep on the grass. One family has 5 kids on a single-bed mattress. RoRo said he would help with the construction.

One Airstrip Too Far

I had arranged for 2 loads of food already in santiago to be delivered
in Cessna Caravans to La Gonave for today, which is sunday, by pilot
jose maldonado out of san juan. I did not get a price from jose until
about 10 last night. Around 6pm, I was copied on an email to pere ajax
asking for assistance clearing airspace in the 70 mile zone for a
flight(s?) from a Bahamas outfit. That was the first time for me to
hear of this plane which also was to arrive Sunday on the small, dirt
airstrip on La Gonave. Around 10 pm, jose emailed me with the flight
cost for two loads: $10232! Come on, Jose! I'm not going to the
Masters! The food has been donated by Go Ministries. Since the
Bahamas plane was going(I thought) and David Hammer Lee has access now
to a much cheaper plane with much higher capacity that can start as
soon as monday, I told jose to hold off. The Bahamas plane never made
it. And La Gonave still needs food :(

People are running out of stuff everywhere. Everyone is trying their best.

Water from camp

Busy day. Salvaged 600 gal tank from roof of nursing school that had rolled and punctured during quake. This is going along the wall of the NS camp fed from a neigh oring well approx 200 feet away. This will be treated with Deep Springs chlorine which is now being produced at St. Criox Hospital. Had some teenagers build the foundation out of block salvaged from collapsed wall. They did a good job. Five bucks apiece. Product coming in now from Save The Children for water and sanitation. Will get latrines dug soon.
Still trying to solve food to La Gonave...difficult.

Ramping Up Production

Since I got here Wednesday, the camp outside the dorm wall but inside the nursing school wall has grown from about 500 to over 2000. The clinic is running full bore with a group of doctors associated with Notre Dame and a group from Japan. I am now running this small reverse osmosis at full tilt trying to store enough for evening meal time. Now pulling from a 50 gallon drum, which makes keeping supplied easier. Noticeable increase in flies and mosquitos today. Working with Daniele Lantagne at CDC trying to get latrine slabs. Business model: dig a hole to specs, get a free slab.

Re: Supply Chain

This post is intended to give an idea about the emails that are flying around and the people involved in getting things here.  If this had happened pre-internet........

ok - that sounds like a plan.  So adam & eric will pick up Aquatabs.... any indication of when?  I assume that Leogane airport is still in play for the short term for things we need quickly but we will work on another route for the larger volumes.

Dave - see below.  we need to establish a supply chain to Leogane.  I that means staging in one US city and flying into PaP then Pgh probably makes the most sense.  CAn you find out if there are any plans for cargo transports from pgh that will be routine trips?

Jim - can LXS donate the use of a container or two to load in pgh and get to Leogane?  I think a container would be valuable to Michael since he could keep it locked for security.

We just talked and he wants it. I try toi get ft laud gear and salt on one plane to PAP, and truck to here. Have call into bill cargill @ ft laud executive airport. Long term, better to get a large load to PAP and truck here. Runway capacity in leogane too small for long term. We should try to stage out of 1 US airport and 1 dr(santiago) or try for direct to PAP from US. So, on spreadsheet note supply points for all gear. I recomend google docs and will be easy for everyone to stay up to date.

Supply Chain

talk to Michael about priorities. I would think that the first load of Aquatabs is a high priority. The bottle caps from FLL may be next.  Then the second load of Aquatabs.

If this thing keeps growing we need a routine way to get more bottles, spigots, etc into Leogane.   DSI can definitely pay for fuel and expenses.  If we get major funding from a large org we could probably pay for flight time, etc so that the pilots don't have to keep pulling out of their pockets.

Let's start to think about establishing a supply chain that can support a larger effort.  So far you probably have transported the volume for ~5,000 systems.  The target of our proposals is about 20,000 systems.  It may well grow to 40,000 or more.

My understanding is that the total weight is 1,600 kg and that is distributed among 11 pallets.  I would estimate a pallet to be 4'x4'x3' high.  They are very light so I would guess that you would max out on volume.

Michael/Suzanne - pls confirm if you get this.

Richard,

I am going to send you a couple of email correspondences that will give you contact points and location.

This email gives the coordinates for Leoganes, Haiti which is where the location of the NGO, Deep Springs International.

Michael Ritter is your contact, but as you can see in the attachments, there are other individuals representing the organization.

Telephone connections have been spotty at best so they have been communicating through emails.

I am copying a number individuals that I have been working with to let them know what we are up to.

For their benefit: we have been having difficulty getting transportation out of Puerto Plata. I still waiting on a few phone calls, but as a back up, Richard Taylor, who has been working with my community in the Dominican Republic, has agreed to help me look for other options in getting the product to Michael.

I am sending Richard all of my contact information, so that if things work his way, He will be able to contact Michael and his group.

Here is some more info on Leogane.  Jeff has sent 4 planes on their the past two days.  Shouldn't be a problem getting the goods on the ground and secured, that is if we can get them in the air.

Kind of just for fun and because I'm a Google Earth nerd - but feel free to pass along to press people to give a sense of what's going on here.  They haven't yet marked out the field in the SW corner where the roads converge that is now being staked out by the Marines and being used as their helicopter pad now.  In my pics you can see one with the plane that landed on the "airstrip" and a Marines helicopter in the air.

Not sure what's all in the emails below the latest, but please strip them if you pass them along in case there's any CDC/UND/CNP stuff that isn't meant to be passed along.

Information on reaching Leogane

Attached are .jpg images taken from Google Earth and marked with information on:

-Temporary landing strip on the bypass road of Léogâne
-Helicopter landing area near the Nursing School and Residence Filariasis
-Street route that is not blocked to reach the Nursing School and Residence Filariasis from main road

Overlays and map mark-ups created by Tyler Bennett from information from Wesly Pierre and Jean-Marc Brissau.

This information is current as of January 20, 2009 and is subject to change.  The .jpg pictures are smaller to download, but do not offer full resolution.  The .kml file is for users of Google Earth.  By downloading the .kml file, when you open it, it will launch Google Earth which will use this data instead of older (pre-earthquake).  More detailed map information is given and the tools in
Google Earth can be used to navigate and zoom in.  Port-au-Prince and Léogâne views are AFTER the earthquake.

: a flight with MDs an supplies on Monday to Leogane and one on Wedensday?

Chers ami(es) de Leogane
Je veux d’abord vous assurer que vous avez beaucoup d’amis et que le monde ne vous a pas oublié.
After a whole day emailing and calling, it seems that we reached our goal that we - a handful of public health professionals from different institutions - set on Thursday night: getting help to Leogane! So before going into the details, I want to thank everyone, but especially Wendy, Caroline and Tiffany for their help!
As you all know, we tried to get a plane directly to Leogane. Jean Marc and Wesley made sure we had the GPS coordinates and a plan of the airstrip. Thanks to some of you, Robin Eissler from Jet quest was contacted and she arranged a donated flight. She also arranged a helicopter in case the plane can’t land in Leogane. For the latter we have to pay, but we think we can easily find those funds. This flight is available tomorrow at 8 am in Fort Lauderdale, but though we really tried, we were – on a Saturday – not able to get supplies in time to Florida. But co-incidentally, there was a group MDs from Iowa who were looking to get down to Leogane and we found out that Ashley Aakesson from CNP was willing to coordinate efforts for Leogane. So we put Ashley in contact with Robin and we hope that on Monday, Leogane can get supplies!
We are still trying to get some medicine to Ralph Pennino from Intervol who will bring supplies on Wednesday to Leogane trough 2 donated flights to DR and helicopters from the US Southern Command.
A lot of you had offered money or wanted to help with fundraising. Our plan is to take tomorrow a break, but Monday we are going to organize the best way to organize this. We will send you regularly updates on activities and on how to donate. Although we focus now on the emergency phase, we plan to keep on working on the reconstruction of Leogane.
Thanks!
els

Aid for leogane:we need supplies in Fort lauderdale tomorrow at 8 am
Importance:
High

Dear
Things are moving! It seems we secured 2 flights, now we have to move to get supplies
Robin Eissler ( who got on board thanks to Nicole and Mike Carlin and Jim Sylivant). They are looking into sending a small plane to Leogane. We will have to send all the supplies to Fort Lauderdale by tomorrow 8 am!. Please help if you have supplies, contacts with UPS, etc.
Ralph Pennino, a MD and ND alumni from Rochester who is active in Intervol.org secured a Falcon 900 jet to fly to Santa Domingo donated by a friend. The US military would then fly the supplies to Leogane via Black Hawk helicopter. This is not finalized but extremely probable.
He has medical supplies but no drugs, IV fluids

So it looks like we have to go to a new search: for supplies and money for the supplies. I know we got already some emails offering supplies.
Thanks
els

Aid for leogane: update

Dear
There was a lot of emailing back and forth.
This is what we have at the moment:
- We have regular contact with our Haitian friends and colleagues in Leogane
- We have the coordinates of an airstrip in Leogane who was used in the past. The place is clear
- we are preparing a short text to send out as soon we found a plane so that we can find funds.
- we are looking in ways to collect money (paypal?).

- We don’t have a plane yet, that will be the most difficult. We have contacts, but nothing concrete. We also try to get contact with people who are bringing relief with helicopters ( thanks Wendy!)
We contacted a lot of people: US military, CDC hierarchy, MSF, …to ask help for Leogane.
I will stop copying everyone, but please let me know if you want to be copied…
I add some assessments of the situation of Leogane and some pictures

Joey's report:
My name is Joey Leary I have lived in Leogane since August 11th. I am intimately acquainted with the Leogane community as I have many contacts and speak Kreyol. I was airlifted out of the country this morning after a brief visit to the US embassy in Port au Prince. I spent 6am to 6pm on Wednesday working with USPH nursing students to provide emergency medical care tohundreds of critically injured men women and babies. Gangrene, sepsis, and impending kidney failure will surely occur in half of these patients if further medical assistance is not provided. I am sending this information in an attempt to expediate the provision of aide to my friends and colleagues in Leogane.
1. Where?
-Leogane
2. Where in Leogane?
- BELVAL PLAZA (UNPH Nursing School, Notre Dame Haiti Program) - 400 displaced families - 100 critically injured, dying
-CAVALY SOCCER STADIUM - unspecified
-HOSPITAL SAINT CROIX (has been closed for the past two years but still is standing after the earthquake) - has 100 empty rooms. If safe, could be turned into a military hospital.
3. Possible Access Points?
- I was able to drive unimpeded from Leogane to the airport on Thursday Jan. 14. We took the route that remains closest to the sea and takes one through the Oil Refinary. (old route has a sink hole and is inaccessable)
-Ca Ira is 1 mile West of Leogane on the beach. Aid that lands in Ca Ira could be transported on the road that dead ends into Belval Plaza.
4. Important to Note
- 100 residential nursing students (army of healthcare workers) living at Belval Plaza.
- NO MEDICAL SUPPLIES!
-Hospital St Croix, UNPH Nursing School, and Residence Filarose have functioning generators for electricity.
-With the generator Hospital St. Croix can pump clean water into the compound.
- Based on my walk from Champ de Mars to Leogane on Tuesday night, the destruction in Leogane was equal or worse than that in Carrefour.
5. Hospital St. Croix Contacts
- Americans (Suzie and John Parker) have opted to stay behind at Hospital St. Croix to direct relief (contact them at
hscguesthouse@gmail.com and 3.582.1664)
- Belval (Residence Filarose, Nursing School contact) -> Jean Marc Brissau (
jbrissau@nd.edu) 3.557-6424, 3.818.2410
- Leogane Physician Contact information: Dr. Luccene Desir (3-555-5246)
